Over the years, we've seen some pretty 'interesting' ice cream flavours - you know, the usual nasi lemak ice cream, the century egg ice cream and all sort of whacky flavours.

But nothing beats this ice cream flavour that was released by an ice cream parlour in Hong Kong.

A support for pro-democracy

It will bring tears to your eyes.
The ice cream parlour in question recently launched a flavour that would quite literally bring tears to their customers' eyes: tear gas-flavoured ice cream.

Yep, you read that right.

The owner of the shop, who wishes to remain anonymous, told news agency AFP that he tried different ingredients, including wasabi and mustard, in an effort to replicate the taste of tear gas, but black pepper came closest with its throat-irritating effects.

“We roast and then grind whole black peppercorns and make them into gelato, the Italian style. It’s a bit hot, but we emphasise its aftertaste, which is a sensation of irritation in the throat.

"It just feels like breathing in tear gas, ” the owner was quoted as saying.

It's just like eating tear gas, they promise.
He added that the flavour is a sign of support for the pro-democracy movement.

“We would like to make a flavour that reminds people that they still have to persist in the protest movement and don’t lose their passion, ” he said.

While it sounds like a hard-to-swallow flavour, you’d be surprised to know that the ice cream has been a hit, with a sale of 20 to 30 scoops of ice cream per day before the quarantine period started in Hong Kong.

We got to admit; this flavour is piquing interest our interest a little.
