Johor’s Hello Kitty Town To Be Closed Down In January 2020 Due To Lack Of Tourists
Hello Kitty fans, we’ve got some sad news for you.
According to the Malay Mail, Sanrio Hello Kitty Town and Thomas Town in Johor will be pulling its shutters soon due to the lack of tourists.
State Tourism, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman, Liow Cai Tung, announced that the theme park will be closed effective 1 January 2020.
Welcoming visitors since 2012, the theme park costs a whopping RM110 million to build.
Ticket sales have dipped over the years forcing the closure of the theme park after seven years.
“I understand that the theme park is closing due to a lack of response over the last few years,” Cai Tung told the English daily
However, she is confident that the closure will not affect Johor’s tourism campaign in 2020.
“I believe it will only have a small impact on the Visit Johor Year 2020 campaign and will not affect overall tourist arrivals to the state."
“The state government does not depend on one particular type of tourism product alone.”
So, Hello Kitty and Thomas & Friends fans, head over to Puteri Harbour one last time to bid goodbye to your favourite characters.
Maybe Hello Kitty should change its name to Goodbye Kitty after this.
