How do you measure your compatibility with your partner?
For some, it’s about sharing the same values and life goals. Others may look at how well they communicate, resolve conflicts, or support each other through life’s challenges.
One Malaysian man recently sparked a heated discussion on social media after sharing that he is contemplating divorcing his wife, despite describing her as a faithful partner.
His main concern? Her monthly salary of RM1,800
In a post on Threads, the man said he and his wife had been married for five years. According to him, his wife is a kind and loyal partner. She would even return home to make hot tea for him whenever he had a fever, as her office is close by.

However, the man was concerned that his wife only earns RM1,800 a month, an amount that hasn’t changed throughout their marriage. Meanwhile, he recently received a salary increment of more than RM5,000.
“This year, I had a salary increment of more than RM5,000, but her income remains RM1,800, just like when we first got married. She has made no effort to do something about it, like maybe doing some sewing part-time.
I’m having a dilemma because she’s a kind and loyal woman—overall, a ‘green flag’ partner. But her salary…”
At the end of the post, the man wondered whether he should stay in the relationship or divorce his wife and find someone who earns a similar income to him.
Netizens weren’t having it
The post has since garnered attention from others, who offered little to no support for the man. Many even criticised him for his materialistic views.
“My dad earns five figures, my mum is a housewife with no income. They’ve been married for 31 years. I’ve never seen my dad ask my mum to do sewing for extra income.”
One user shared, “Your salary is only RM5,000. You should have asked your wife to quit her job when you got a salary bump. Why are you asking her to take on extra jobs? Who’s supporting who here?”

“Meanwhile, my husband, who earns less than RM5,000, has never asked me to get a job. What an ungrateful man.”
