TLDR
- An 88-year-old man from a Peranakan Baba Nyonya family called the Duyong State Assemblyman (ADUN) five times to make sure the Jalur Gemilang was displayed correctly.
- The man was traumatised after previously hanging the Jalur Gemilang upside down.
- He said he has never missed the tradition of putting up the Jalur Gemilang each year as part of his Merdeka month celebrations.
You know Merdeka month has arrived when the Jalur Gemilang starts appearing everywhere. From flags lining the streets to Malaysians displaying them outside their homes and businesses, the familiar red, white, blue, and yellow colours can be seen across the country as we prepare to celebrate Malaysia's independence.
But for one Chinese uncle, simply putting up the Jalur Gemilang wasn't enough. He wanted to make absolutely sure he was displaying it correctly.
So, he decided to call his local State Assemblyman (ADUN), not once, but five times, just to ensure the Jalur Gemilang was hung the right way.

Traumatised by a past mishap
Duyong State Assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abd Halem recently took to TikTok to share the story of George Lim, an 88-year-old man from a Peranakan Baba Nyonya family.
In the video, Mohd Noor Helmy can be seen inspecting the Jalur Gemilang Lim had purchased to ensure it was displayed correctly. He also jokingly revealed that Lim had called his office five times just to confirm the flag was positioned properly.

Lim later explained that he had previously hung the Jalur Gemilang upside down and was still traumatised by the experience. To avoid repeating the mistake, he decided to seek the ADUN's help to check that everything was in order.
"He's very dedicated to the point that he called me five times just to make sure he had installed the Jalur Gemilang correctly."
Meanwhile, Lim said putting up the Jalur Gemilang has always been a tradition for him, and he has never missed displaying the national flag outside his home each year.
"I'm very serious when it comes to Merdeka. If other people don't want to put up flags at their homes, that's up to them. But as for me, I'll continue doing it every year."
