19-year-old Nurin Amalin is a bright student and has represented Malaysia to compete in the Asia & Pacific Invitational Goalball Tournament in Bangkok. The St. John’s Institution student and para-athlete has managed this despite having only 20% visual acuity.

Although she was born normal-sighted, Nurin succumbed to a fever at the age of ten, which triggered the Stevens-Johnsons syndrome that eventually decimated her visual abilities.

Through Nurin, we see the meaning behind each colour of the Malaysian Flag in a unique way in the heart-warming video with stunning shots of the country in celebration of our 65th Independence Day.

This is part of Astro’s Gemilang Bersama campaign, in conjunction with Hari Kebangsaan and Hari Malaysia. Naga DDB Tribal and the Directors of Think Tank were given the task of reminding Malaysians of the symbolism and significance of the national colours through the eyes of Nurin.

Working with the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB), Nik Radzi and his team put together a script to communicate these ideas to Malaysians while raising awareness about the visually impaired. They had the challenge of portraying the different colours interwoven through a rich fabric of the different communities and cultures of Malaysia.

Henry Tan, Group CEO of Astro said, “Through this video, Astro hopes to inspire our nation to come together and stand strong, as visualised by the hands representing the multiple races which are intertwined with our national colours – Blue for Unity, Red for Bravery, White for Purity, and Yellow for Loyalty. These are the shared values that banded Malaysians together since the birth of our nation and will continue to be our north star.”

Malaysians will relate to the everyday things that Nurin associates with each colour of the flag as she touches a Jalur Gemilang with embedded Braille.

She shared, “This video has given me an opportunity to share how I see and feel the world through my point of view. It has been an amazing experience. I hope Malaysians can be inspired by the story and appreciate the meaning of the Jalur Gemilang colours. Most importantly, I wish all of us can continue to love our beautiful home country wholeheartedly.”
