Whether you’re looking to renovate your own home, looking into transforming a new pad, or just love simply looking at home renovation photos, we came across a Twitter post by a Shah Alam-based interior designer, Benfirdaus Azraai, who transformed an old home from the 80s to a brand spanking IG-worthy residence.

The living room previously had tacky pink walls and thin cheap-looking orange curtains that clashed horribly with the paint colour.

The windows were also covered by grills that made the space seem cagey.

Two of the windows were taken out and replaced with a three-paneled sliding door to allow natural light, ventilation, and even to act as a space for gatherings since us Malaysians love meeting just to eat!

The dining space sported a typical design for old homes, with dull-looking furniture.

The display cabinet was taken away to create an open space. As the owner liked having a retro element, the floor were changed to classic tiles.

The wet kitchen was made into a serving area and a custom arch, which can be seen in many trendy cafes nowadays, was placed to elevate the space instead of a cabinet with boring straight lines.

The windows were also made smaller for privacy.

The wall behind cramped and dark bedroom with the same pink-coloured paint was demolished and a toilet was added to it.

The combination of white, timber and earthy tones gave the room a cozy feeling without it being gloomy.

Only minor changes were made to the exterior of the house with an open porch was given a fresh coat of paint and a few items were added.

The roof and the floor were repainted to be the same colour. Wind stones were added for the privacy of the home owner so that they could have ‘cekodok for tea’ without worrying that they would be seen by the whole neighbourhood while not shutting them off from the world.

As the house was old and rather neglected the entire renovation works cost approximately RM320k that included building custom cabinets and purchasing loose items. If the cost of buying the house was cheap because it was old then the cost of the renovations evens out, right?
