Face it. These days, we spend more time with our colleagues than with anyone else. We wake up at the crack of dawn to clock in at work and spend most of our waking hours at the office before hitting the loft way after the sun has gone down. With so much time spent together, it is no wonder that office romance has become somewhat of a norm. When office romance blooms and the workplace becomes a haven, and everything becomes lovey-dovey. But what happens when the relationship disintegrates? What happens when you dump your colleague or your colleague dumps you? Oh, the horror! Well, keep calm because here at Hello, we’ve come up with 5 steps to guarantee you a smooth sailing post-breakup journey.

STEP 1:
BE COOL ABOUT THE BREAKUP. If you were the one who instigated it, then keep it professional at work. You won’t want your ex bawling his or her eyes, begging for you to ‘give it one more try’ in front of all your bosses. *CRINGE* Or if you were the one who got dumped then, keep calm and put on a façade. You can cry a river at home but don’t even think of shedding a single tear at the office. You’re a tough cookie. Don’t let anyone else think otherwise.

STEP 2:
KEEP THE BREAKUP DETAILS TO YOURSELF, or if you really have to pour your heart out, then make sure to lay the facts to only a few trusted friends or colleagues. Words can easily get twisted and a simple office breakup can turn into a Korean sob story. With lots of salt and pepper thrown in.

STEP 3:
The romance is over. It’s time to move on. So take your eyes off your ex ( or any other office hottie) and FOCUS ON YOUR WORK. The last thing you want is to be fired because of your lack of concentration.

STEP 4:
DON’T BAD MOUTH YOUR EX. Sure, they may have hurt your feelings and ego but who cares if they start spreading malicious rumours about you? Don’t fall to their level. Empty vessels make the most noise, remember? Sooner or later, everyone will see who the real A-hole is. And if you really have to confront your ex, then do it, with your bazooka loaded to the max; just make sure to take your fight away from the office.

STEP 5:
No matter how amicable the breakup was, there will still be some form of animosity and awkwardness, so if possible, REDUCE THE NUMBER OF INTERACTIONS. And if you have no choice but to work together then keep it strictly business.

STEP 6:
Now, unless you truly cannot stand facing your ex, then this is not a step we would recommend. But if you really cannot take it, then try to apply for a position in a different department or better yet, accept a better job offer that comes along.

Whatever the case may be, know that if you follow these steps, your life will become more peaceful after the breakup. All the best to you!
