Is the Malaysian Parliament haunted?

Well, we don't know the answer to that, but a short video that's been circulating on social media recently certainly did not help debunk that notion.

Parliament 'horror' stories

On Wednesday (22 September), Member of Parliament (MP) for Segambut Hannah Yeoh uploaded a video clip onto her official Twitter account.

In the one-minute-and-18-second video, Yeoh was raising a question to the Ministry Of Federal Territories in regards to the appeal of the Taman Rimba Kiara issue.

Here's the video:

Taman Rimba Kiara : Residents won at Court of Appeal. DBKL challenging it by appealing the decision. How much is being spent by DBKL to fight ratepayers? #Segambut raised this in Parliament. pic.twitter.com/YudyVdVME4

However, it wasn't Yeoh's spirited speech that got the attention of netizens.

Instead, an eagle-eyed netizen caught something rather unexplainable in the video clip: an empty chair behind Yeoh moving by itself!

"Kerusi belakang pusing sendiri (The chair behind swiveled by itself)", Twitter user @mraaj89 wrote.

Keep your eyes peeled on the 12-second mark of this video:

Here's another interesting fact: the seat behind Yeoh actually belongs to nobody.

Notably missing on the bench was the plaque stating the name of the MP and their constituency, which can be seen in the screenshot below, which indicates that the seat is vacant:

Name plaques signifies the seat is taken.
On top of that, a quick check on the Parliament seating arrangement on the Parlimen Malaysia website also shows that - gasp! - the seat behind Yeoh is indeed vacant:

Empty seats, who dis?
Certainly very creepy, this!

Netizens' reactions

The 16-second clip has since gone viral, racking up more than 75,300 views since it was posted two days ago.

A majority of the netizens who watched the clip were pretty amused, while some joked that other-worldly beings have permanently moved into the Parliament since it's been vacated for so long:

There was rumors long ago that Parliament building was already haunted by ghost lols

There were those who also offered some pretty convincing explanation behind the self-swivelling chair:

kucing lari bawah tu ???

— MUHAMMAD ADIB (@namasayaadib) September 23, 2021

Hadir tapi sembunyi bawah meja spjg sesi perbahasan.

As for Yeoh, she definitely took the joke in stride:

We can't wait for your explanation on this matter, YB!
