What does it really mean to be fit for everyday life? That's the question Anytime Fitness Malaysia's inaugural Battle of the Purple Champions (BOPC) set out to answer, and after getting the chance to participate in the challenge ourselves, we quickly realised this wasn't your typical fitness competition.

Hosted as part of Anytime Fitness' celebration of reaching 600 clubs across Asia, the regional challenge made its Malaysian debut with a refreshing approach which is that fitness that focuses less on showing off in the gym and more on preparing for real life.

A different kind of fitness challenge

When most people think of fitness competitions, they imagine elite athletes flipping tyres, lifting enormous weights or tackling gruelling obstacle courses. Battle of the Purple Champions, however, takes a much more practical approach.

The challenge is built around functional fitness, with all four stations designed to mimic movements people encounter in everyday life. The Moving Day station required teams to rearrange furniture pieces to match a layout card, testing communication, coordination and teamwork. Bike Race pushed participants to cycle a combined 5 minutes without stopping, demanding endurance and consistency.

At Sandbag Shuffle, teams had to transport sandbags to the finish line using a mix of strength, rhythm and precision, while Champion's Climb saw participants carry a kettlebell through a designated course, challenging both stamina and grip strength.

The catch? Teams had to complete all four stations within a strict 12-minute time limit, adding an extra layer of pressure and excitement to every challenge.

As participants, we found the stations demanding without being intimidating. Rather than rewarding a single strength, the format tested endurance, balance, mobility, coordination and teamwork in equal measure. More importantly, it reminded us that being fit isn't just about setting personal records in the gym. Sometimes, it's about carrying groceries, moving furniture or climbing stairs with a little less effort.

Anyone can join & that's the point

One of the biggest strengths of the event was how accessible it felt.

Unlike many fitness competitions that can appear reserved for seasoned gym-goers, BOPC was designed for people across different fitness levels. Whether you're someone who works out regularly or you've only recently started your fitness journey, the event creates space for everyone to participate.

The atmosphere felt more community event than hardcore competition, which aligns closely with Anytime Fitness' philosophy of making fitness more approachable for everyone.

More than just a milestone celebration

The launch of BOPC Malaysia coincides with a significant milestone for the brand, the opening of its 600th club in Asia.

While the number itself is impressive, the event served as a reminder that fitness brands today are increasingly focused on creating experiences and communities, not just providing access to equipment.

Anytime Fitness' recent expansion into East Malaysia, beginning with Kuching, further highlights its ambition to make fitness accessible nationwide, from Peninsular Malaysia to Borneo.

The Battle of the Purple Champions feels like a natural extension of that mission. Rather than promoting fitness as a destination or a short-term goal, the challenge reinforces the idea that staying active is an ongoing lifestyle supported by the people around you.

Tough, fun & surprisingly relatable

Walking into Battle of the Purple Champions, we expected a standard fitness competition, but left with a fresh perspective on what fitness for everyday life can look like.

The challenges were tough enough to get our hearts pumping, yet approachable for participants of different fitness levels. What stood out most was how the workouts were built around practical, real-world movements rather than pure athletic performance.

Our only complaint? We wished there were more than four stations. Just as we were getting into the competitive spirit, the challenge was over, and a few extra stations could have made the experience even more engaging and well-rounded.

Still, BOPC succeeds in making fitness feel accessible, community-driven and fun. If this Malaysian debut is anything to go by, it could become a fixture on the local fitness calendar.
