We Tried The Roti Canai Sarang Burung And Here’s What We Think
A roti canai, but not as you know it.
We are talking about a dish of two sunny-side-up eggs, enclosed by the golden-brown flatbread, topped with spiced minced chicken or beef and fresh scallions. Sounds as delicious as its interesting, doesn’t it?
Then make your way to Roti Canai Abah at Balik Pulau to try their famous Roti Canai Sarang Burung.
Humble stall, not so humble queue
We arrived at 10.30am, and there was a line snaking out of the humble stall, which is always a good sign in a town that takes its food seriously.Partly due to the social distance guidelines, it took 30 minutes to get a table, but we stay this is irrelevant as it rather fuelled our appetite.
Sights and sounds of doughs meticulously shaped as bird nests, quick egg cracking manoeuvres and minced meat filled to the constant orders of "Special".
Just like us, most visitors were paying attention to the full-of-life griddles.
Pretty as it is delicious
Roti Canai Sarang Burung fits the saying - you eat with your eyes first. The dish was placed on a wooden plank with a side of gravy. The eggs, cooked to perfection, revealed its runny yolk with the mildest slid of the fork to add a depth of flavour and colour.
The bread itself was a tad crispier to a regular roti canai as it had to hold the dish together, yet the creamy egg and chicken gravy balanced out a textural interplay.
The highlight has to be the minced chicken, which had a spicy and savoury kick to it, reminding us of the lasagna filling that we always crave.
A few spoonfuls of gravy on the roti canai gave away that familiar experience but for the most part, the dish was good on its own.
This stall deserves a mention for upping the roti canai game without novel-length ingredients.
Priced at RM5, the Roti Canai Sarang Burung was definitely a bang for the bucks.
For those of you who crave a dish that scores on all notes, this newest avatar of our favourite breakfast should seal the deal.
