When and Where Can You Bring Your Pet Dog? Two Viral Incidents Spark Debate Among Malaysians

Pets are more than just animal companions; they're often considered part of the family. It's no surprise, then, that many pet owners want to include their furry friends in everyday activities, whether it's a stroll through the park or a quick errand.

Amid ongoing discussions surrounding animal welfare and several recent animal-related controversies that have captured public attention, another pet-related debate has emerged online. This time, the conversation centres on where pet owners should draw the line when bringing their animals into public spaces.

Recently, two separate incidents involving individuals bringing their pet dogs into business premises sparked debate among Malaysians.

Customer seen placing dog in shopping trolley at Perak supermarket

The first incident took place at a supermarket in Teluk Intan, Perak, where a customer was seen placing her dog inside a shopping trolley while shopping.

In a statement, the supermarket's management said it had taken immediate action regarding the incident. The customer involved was informed that pets are strictly prohibited inside the premises and was instructed to remove the dog immediately.

In response to concerns raised by Muslim customers, the store also sought guidance from the Hilir Perak District Office of the Perak Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPk) regarding the proper cleansing procedure.

"We take this matter seriously, especially the concerns of Muslim customers regarding cleanliness and ritual purity."

They added, "Accordingly, our premises will be temporarily closed to allow the cleaning process to be carried out in accordance with the provided guidelines. We sincerely apologise for the concern, inconvenience, and mistake that has occurred. We take full responsibility and deeply regret the incident."

In a follow-up post, the supermarket's management confirmed that the premises had successfully undergone the sertu cleansing process.

Similar incident reported at a McDonald's outlet in Johor

Meanwhile, another similar incident involving a pet dog has gone viral on social media. This time, the incident was reportedly captured at the McDonald's Setia Tropika DT outlet in Johor Bahru.

In a post on Threads, a woman known by the username @madihahhamdan claimed that she and several other patrons saw two women bringing a dog into the restaurant.

According to her, the manager on duty reportedly approached the women twice regarding the dog, but they allegedly ignored the instructions and remained seated.

In the comments section, she later claimed that the women eventually moved after drawing attention from other patrons and being reprimanded again by the manager.

"They finally moved when customers began staring at them, and the manager had once again reprimanded them. I pity the staff who had to cleanse the table and the chair."

The incident has since sparked debate among social media users. While many criticised the individuals for bringing a dog into a restaurant, others questioned whether the public would react the same way if the animal had been a cat instead.

"I hate this kind of pet owner. Selfish. The dog would be the one who received all the hate. It's a dog; they can't say anything!"

One user commented, "Any animals are prohibited from restaurants with Halal certification, regardless of whether they are dogs or cats. If a complaint is lodged, the outlet's Halal certification could potentially be affected. That's why staff usually do not allow people to leave food for stray cats in or around the restaurant."

The two incidents have reignited discussions about responsible pet ownership and whether pet-friendly practices should extend to supermarkets, restaurants, and other shared public spaces. 

While many animal lovers view pets as family members, others argue that business owners and customers must also consider hygiene requirements, religious sensitivities, and the comfort of the wider public.
