A 10-year-old animal shelter in Semenyih is facing the possibility of closure and is currently looking for funds to help it survive.

Meefah Shelter has 3,000 dogs, 60 cats, 20 tortoises, one pig and one monkey. It’s daily operating costs come up to RM2,000.


“We are a no-kill shelter, and the dogs are strays that were caught by local councils and bailed out by animal lovers,” said the shelter’s volunteer Yong Lee Fong.

Yong told Malay Mail that as a last resort, the shelter’s founder Chan Mee Fah had proposed that the dogs be put to sleep to reduce the cost.

“But the volunteers opposed it as it went against the shelter's stand. Hence we are racing against time to raise funds to maintain it.”

Prior to this, Chan, who is now wheelchair bound, used her inheritance from her late husband to sort out the expenses for the shelter.

The money is now running low.

The shelter also has set up an association called the Selangor Furry Future Association for public donations.
