Earlier this year, a particularly nasty incident involving an angry Netizen forced Maxis into increasing the amount of data its customers would receive per plan. The move was met with some rejoicing and a trickle of subscribers opting out to rivals Digi and Celcom. We don’t know what spurred this sudden generosity, but Maxis has once again increased the amount of data available for its MaxisOne subscribers.

These new rates are a significant upgrade to existing subscribers with the RM98/mth column receiving an additional 15GB of data over the 5GB they’ve been receiving a month. This upgrade however, comes at the cost of your data being split in half. For example, if you’re getting 20GB a month, you only get 10GB for weekday use and 10GB for weekends. All MaxisOne subscribers will be upgraded automatically starting November 15 to 18 and non-subscribers can hop on the bandwagon come November 15 as well. While this upgrade is welcome, it's not the best either.

Case in point, Webe offers unlimited calls, SMS, and data for RM79/mth. TM has a 57% stake in the parent company of Webe and we’re not sure what the coverage is like, but if they’re tapping into existing lines and cell towers, it’s safe to assume they’re pretty good. Compared to Maxis' RM98/mth with 20GB, unlimited data at RM20 less sounds like a better deal.

Budget 2017 highlighted the fact that we would receive Internet broadbad at higher speeds for the same price starting January 2017 and it's unclear if this is Maxis' preemptive strike on the market now that they're losing the monopoly it once had on the market.
