Remember the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project introduced by the former government that was put on hold by current Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad?

Well, the new government has relaunched the project.

According to a report by Bernama, Transport Minister Anthony Loke relaunched the ECRL project on Thursday (25 July) at the Dungun Tunnel site.

The decision came after the government managed to shave a total of RM21.5 billion off the initial cost of RM65.5 billion.

The project was 15 per cent complete when it was put on hold in July last year, the news agency reported.

It's on!
As such, the new route will reportedly be 40km shorter but would still cover 20 stations. The route now starts from Kota Bharu, going through Mentakab, Jelebu, Kuala Kelawang, Bangi / Kajang, Putrajaya before ending in Port Klang.

The Star Online reported back in April that the ECRL project is set for completion on 31 December 2026.
