Apple May Slow Down Third-Party Fast Charging For New iPhone Models

Let's be honest, how many of you actually buy a replacement charging cable from the official store when your original one dies?

We know how you feel because we're cheap like that too. I mean, all cables practically have the same function, right?

Well, there are rumours going around that Apple may be changing that mindset.

According to Mac Otakara, new iPhones to be released may come with a feature that can verify whether or not the connected cables and chargers are certified accessories.

The C-AUTH, a USB Type-C authentication specification, would interfere with the fast charging option if an uncertified charger is detected.

This feature reportedly aims to save the device from being damaged by faulty or poorly constructed cables. With that, the device can then confirm it is safe to operate, enabling features like the USB Power Delivery (PD) 3.0.

Otherwise, the charger would only be able to charge at 2.5 watts or below, which is a lot weaker than the 18 watts required for fast charging.

In other words, if you want to charge your new iPhones fast, you would need an official charger from Apple or third-party brands that meet the USB PD 3.0 standard because many external brands have started adapting to this requirement.

Existing iPhone models would also be able to use the new cable to charge quicky, but it doesn't come with the authentication feature.
