If you're a motorcyclist who has no regards for red lights or a driver who speed up instead of slow down at the traffic light when you see it turning yellow, you might want to change your behaviour or face fines.

From now until 31 December, the police will be watching drivers who beat red lights closely, via ‘Operation Red Light’.

News Straits Times, quoting a report from Bernama, said from January to November this year, 26,764 motorcycles, 20,751 cars, 2,208 lorries and 2,447 other vehicles were issued with summons for running red lights.

This was confirmed in the report by Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Azisman Alias.

Azisman added that the total summonses issued to errant road users last year were 69,267.

Motorcyclists are the main culprits

According to a report on The Sun, half of the 69,267 summons issued were to motorcyclists while the rest were for other vehicle categories.

Azisman said that motorcyclists involved in P-hailing or parcel delivery services were amongst the most summoned for breaking traffic rules.

"We view this driving trend and attitude seriously as it can cause accidents and is worrisome to the public.

"We wish to remind all motorists to adhere to road traffic laws and those caught beating the red lights will either be issued with summonses on the spot or have their vehicle registration number recorded for further action.

"Offenders can face a fine of up to RM2,000 or imprisonment of up to six months under road traffic laws," Azisman was quoted as saying.

Besides taking legal actions against errant motorists, the police will also be educating and instilling awareness.
