BU Teen Who Confessed His Feelings Before Fatally Stabbing Schoolmate Idolised School Shooters

The 15-year-old boy who fatally stabbed his 16-year-old schoolmate reportedly confronted her at knifepoint in a toilet at a school in Bandar Utama before confessing his feelings.

Grounds of judgment by High Court Judge Adlin Abdul Majid revealed that the boy, identified only as L, saw the victim, Yap Shing Xuen, heading to a female toilet on the lower floor before following her inside.

“Once inside the cubicle, he locked the door and proceeded to ask the deceased whether she was (her name) and told her he liked her."

"The victim resisted and attempted to leave. The suspect then pushed her back before stabbing her,” it said.

Based on an autopsy report dated 22 December 2025, Yap suffered between 180 and 200 stab and incised wounds across various parts of her body.

The wounds were believed to have been inflicted with a knife measuring approximately 30cm. Yap later died from multiple stab wounds to her neck and chest.

Obsession took a darker turn

The judge also said L developed an obsession with Yap around August 2024. In the months leading up to the tragedy in October last year, he allegedly watched and followed her around school.

He also created separate social media accounts to follow her online.

“Over the following year, the infatuation evolved. First, he was convinced that the deceased reciprocated his feelings and was in love with him, a condition the psychiatric report referred to as an erotomanic delusion,” she said.

However, the infatuation allegedly took a darker turn after L watched online videos related to violent crimes. According to the judgment, his feelings gradually evolved into envy, anger, hatred and eventually an intention to kill Yap.

The judgment also stated that L had developed an interest in school shooters and other notorious killers. He reportedly identified with the perpetrators because he believed they shared similar experiences of bullying, social isolation and a desire for recognition.

Judge Adlin further noted that the boy began experiencing auditory hallucinations in the form of a voice speaking to him in Mandarin, which he claimed instructed him to kill Yap. The psychiatric report described this as commanding auditory hallucinations.

Around the same period, he began identifying with a god-like character and came to believe that he himself had become a god-like figure.

“He believed he was entitled to eliminate those he considered unworthy, a condition that the report referred to as grandiose delusions."

"It was around this time that he purchased a Death Note-style notebook and wrote down the names of four schoolmates, including Yap.”

He allegedly brought three knives to school every day before the incident

The report also stated that the boy purchased three combat knives from an online store in July and August last year.

Court documents further revealed that he carried the knives to school daily for about two weeks before the fatal stabbing.

“For approximately two weeks before the incident, the boy carried the larger knife, suspended from his neck beneath his shirt, and two smaller knives in his trouser pockets to school daily.”

On 3 October last year, the boy was suspended from school for one week after allegedly assaulting two classmates whom he believed were conspiring to harm him.

During the week spent at home, he began planning an attack on the school. He initially chose 20 April, the anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting, as the date of the planned attack.

However, he later feared he would be expelled before then and lose the opportunity to carry out the attack.

Condition reportedly worsened due to internet exposure and violent content

Senior consultant forensic psychiatrist Dr Ian Lloyd Anthony later diagnosed the boy with schizophrenia accompanied by psychopathic and sadistic traits.

Findings also indicated that he had a strong genetic predisposition to mental illness, with several family members reportedly having a history of psychiatric disorders.

“His family and teachers noticed a gradual change in him around the MCO (Movement Control Order) period. He became withdrawn, isolated and refused to communicate with his family."

"By then, he had developed a persistent conviction that he was physically unattractive and that people at school were laughing at him, leading him to wear a mask at all times. This was referred to as paranoid delusions,” said a report.

Anthony also said the boy became increasingly suspicious of CCTV cameras and believed he was “being watched by the eye”.

According to the psychiatric findings, his condition continued to deteriorate as he spent more time consuming internet content, violent video games and anime.

Acquitted on grounds of unsound mind

On 14 September, the High Court ruled that L had been of unsound mind at the time of the incident.

He was subsequently acquitted of murder but ordered to be detained and treated at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Perak at the pleasure of the Sultan of Selangor.
