Did You Know That Owning Sex Toys in M’sia Is Illegal? Penang Woman Fined for Owning 102 Sex Toys
Some adults may use sex toys such as dildos and vibrators for their uhh…sexy time, but did you know that owning these items is illegal in Malaysia? A 29-year-old businesswoman in Penang was recently charged and fined RM2,000 for owning a whopping total of 102 sex toys.
She was found possessing the toys at a shopping complex in Pesiaran Bayan Indah on February 6 (we assume she was selling them). She pleaded guilty after an interpreter read out the charges in front of Magistrate Chia Huey Ting at the Balik Pulau Magistrate Court.
Section 292 of the Penal Code makes it an offence to sell, hire, distribute, publicly exhibit or in any manner put into circulation any obscene book, pamphlet, paper, drawing, painting, representation, figure or any other obscene object. If found guilty, you can face a jail time of up to 3 years, a fine, or both.

However, after a quick Google search, we found numerous websites selling these toys online in Malaysia. We’ve also seen random ads on local shopping platforms advertising these toys.
Home Ministry prosecuting officer Mahadzir Saad asked the court for a sentence commensurate with the crime. However, defence counsel Teh Yi Kai from the National Legal Aid Foundation requested a non-custodial sentence and a minimal fine. His reason was that the accused earned only RM1,800 a month. She also had to care for her parents and two younger siblings, who were college students.
It was ruled that she would be fined RM2,000 in default of two months’ imprisonment. She paid the fine.
As reported by The Star, earlier this year, 2,295 units of sex toys worth about RM70,000 were seized during raids in Johor, Penang, Perak, and Sarawak. Last year, RM1.1 million worth of sex toys were seized during a warehouse raid in Penang, according to Mashable SE Asia.
So, if you own a sex toy or have considered buying one, take note!
