Earlier today Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad resigned as prime minister of the country.
Hours later, after holding an audience with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, he has now been appointed as interim prime minister.
According to a report by Malaysiakini, the Agong accepted the prime minister's resignation but said that Dr Mahathir should remain in charge until a new government is formed.
It was reported that Dr Mahathir had an audience with the Agong at around 7pm at Istana Negara on 24 February.
A move in line with the constitution
Meanwhile, according to a report in The Star, Datuk Seri Mohd Zuki Ali, the Chief Secretary to the Government later commented that the move was in line with Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution.
"During this period, Dr Mahathir will manage the country's administration until a new prime minister is appointed and a new Cabinet is formed," he said in a statement.
