They may not be old enough to frequent bars and clubs, but they could soon take part in the biggest democratic action in the country.

Yep, that's right; 18-year-olds may be able to vote in the next general elections.

The power is in your hands

According to a report by Malay Mail, quoting the Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun, they are still in the process of amending the laws in relation to voter registration as well as establish the standard operating procedures and support system that comes with it.

“The EC estimates that all this can be done within 18 to 24 months from the date the Bill was passed in Dewan Negara last 25 July. We expect the date of implementation to be by July 2021,” he was quoted as saying.

A big responsibility for 18-year-olds.
Azhar also revealed that the EC will be meeting with relevant parties to facilitate the process.

This just means that once everything is done and dusted, 18-year-olds will be eligible to vote in the next general elections, which is set to take place in 2023.

Currently, the voting age in Malaysia is 21 years old.

Do you think it's a good move to lower down the voting age?
