An all-around maths genius
The New Straits Times reported that the boy, Isaac Gew Ern Yi, became the youngest Malaysian candidate to sit for the Mathematics Extended Cambridge IGCSE last year.
He got an A.
In case you're wondering, the IGCSE exams are equivalent to the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), taken by students between the age of 16 and 18.
Isaac's mother, Rebecca Sook Hui Tay, told the news portal that her son took seven months to prepare for the exam.
“Extended Mathematics IGCSE paper covers topics like trigonometry and advanced algebra. He catches on quick learning through YouTube and completing past year exam papers with guidance from me and my husband as well as a tuition teacher.
"Having competed in many Mathematics Olympiads helped him to get ready for the exam too,” Rebecca was quoted as saying, adding that her son has been passionate about numbers since he was one.
Apparently, the maths whiz, a Standard Three student at the Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Wu Teck in Klang, Selangor, does more than just ace maths quizzes.
He has also won multiple Gold and Championship Awards at the national and international Mathematics Olympiad since he was in Standard One.
“He could count to 100 at the age of one and start doing multiplications when he was three.
“Currently, he is preparing for IGCSE for Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Computer Science,” she added.
Looks like Isaac's going to grow up to become a rocket scientist.
