Just two weeks after Malaysia’s most wanted Islamic State (IS) recruiter Muhammad Wanndy Mohamed Jedi was reportedly killed in a drone attack, it has been confirmed that four more Malaysians have taken over his job.

The individuals were identified as Muhammad Rafiuddin, Akhbar Zainal, Muhammad Fuzail and Muhammad Zahar.

Federal Police Special Branch Counterterrorism Division principal assistant director Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said that the four who are currently in Syria were IS “prime movers” in Malaysia.

Ayob said the police have successfully arrested 300 IS members since 2013, 36 of them this year alone.

Out of the 300, 141 had been charged in court, 43 under the POCA (Prevention of Crime Act) and 23 under POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act).

The remaining members were released.

In a New Straits Times report, Ayob also said the number of Malaysian IS members in Syria has dropped from 95 to 56 at the moment.

This group consists of 36 men and 20 women, aged between four and 50.

Eight of them have since returned to Malaysia and 31 others had been killed.

With the help of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the authorities were also able to shut down access to nearly 30 IS-related websites and Facebook pages.

The public has been warned against the terror group’s ideologies which continues to spread across social media despite losing ground in Syria and Iraq.

“They now target every level (of society), from school and university students, government staff, search and rescue personnel, members of the public, imam and university lecturers,” Ayob said.
