It is widely known that Malaysia and Palestine share a friendly relationship.

To celebrate the friendship, a road in the western district of Gaza has been renamed as "Malaysia Street" by the local municipality.

This was announced by Palestinian Cultural Organization Malaysia (PCOM) chairman Muslim Imran on Twitter.

He shared an image of the road with a sign displaying the name of the renamed street, along with a brief narrative.

"Malaysia: It is one of the Southeast Asian countries that gained its independence from British occupation on August 31, 1957, and its capital is Kuala Lumpur.

"Malaysia has an important role in supporting the Palestinian cause. It always calls for an end to the Israeli occupation and granting the Palestinian people all their rights. It also rejects normalization with the Israeli occupation,” it read.

The renaming happened on Malaysia's 64th National Day, where Muslim was quoted as saying that the gesture was a sign of appreciation for the strong solidarity between both countries.

"Hopefully, the relationship between the two nations will continue to grow stronger, until someday when Palestine will be free and Malaysians will come to Gaza and Jerusalem to celebrate our Merdeka with us," Muslim said.

He also posted a video of the Malaysian national anthem ‘Negaraku’ being played on the streets of Gaza.

Last year, Malaysia also renamed Jalan Raja Laut 1 as Jalan Palestin as a symbol of solidarity for the country.
