The Government Is Considering Renaming KLIA To SIA (Sepang International Airport)

But what if one day, the government decides to rename KLIA? We are pretty sure mass confusion will ensue.

Well, like it or not, it seems that the rebranding might happen in the near future.

The Selangor state government is mulling changing KLIA’s name to SIA, which stands for Sepang International Airport, as reported by the Malay Mail.

You may be wondering how this idea cam about since literally no one has any issue with the name.

According to Selangor state executive councillor Ng Sze Han, KLIA is located in Sepang, Selangor, and not Kuala Lumpur.

“Renowned international airports often use locality as their name, for example, Narita / Haneda in Tokyo, Incheon in Seoul, Suvarnabhumi in Bangkok, Baiyun in Guangzhou, Pudong in Shanghai, Schiphol in Amsterdam and so on,” Ng said.

Therefore, the name should be changed in accordance to the airport’s accurate location.

The exco’s confirmation comes after a leaked document, supposedly minutes of a Selangor state exco meeting last October, highlighted the state’s intention to rebrand KLIA to SIA.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke, however, clarified that he had yet to receive any official request from the Selangor government on the matter, which means that the name KLIA stays for now.

What do you think of the move guys? Honestly, we feel that KLIA has more of an international appeal whereas SIA sounds kind of Singaporean (read: Singapore Airlines). The last thing we want is for them to claim our airport because it sounds like their official airlines.
