The Government Has Decided To Abolish The Death Penalty

The death penalty is seen as the heaviest penalty in the law and order system. The sentencing is currently used worldwide, including in Malaysia.

Well, that’s about to change soon as the government has decided to abolish the death sentence for good.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong told The Star that “the death penalty will be abolished and there should be a moratorium on all executions until then.”

“Death penalty will be abolished. Full stop. Since we are abolishing the sentence, all executions should not be carried out.”

So, what will replace the death sentence?

The only concern surrounding the abolishment is the inmates who are currently on death row.

Liew added that they will “inform the Pardons Board to look into various applications for convicts on the (death penalty) waiting list to either be commuted or released.”

The abolishment is expected to be tabled at the next parliament sitting on 15 October.
