Govt Orders Malls to Provide Recycling Facilities by 2026 or Risk Losing License to Operate
Starting January 1 next year, all shopping malls in Malaysia will be required to have recycling facilities.
In a report by FMT, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the decision by the National Local Government Council is part of the ministry's efforts to manage plastic waste in the country.
Furthermore, malls that fail to provide recycling facilities risk not being granted a business license by local authorities.

“Any shopping mall that does not provide recycling facilities will not be granted a business license,” Nga said while winding up the debate on the Street, Drainage and Building (Amendment) Bill 2025 during a session at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
The bill was later passed by voice vote after being debated by 10 Members of Parliament from both the Government and the Opposition.

For reference, some malls in Malaysia that already have recycling facilities include IPC Shopping Mall and 1 Utama Shopping Centre.
