With the government planning to reopen schools soon, it's understandable that many parents are worried about their children contracting the coronavirus as the government has yet to make the vaccine available for children below the age of 12.

If you're one of those parents, worry not; your kids will be getting the vaccine really soon.

Only one type of vaccine will be available

The Health Ministry has confirmed that the administration of COVID-19 vaccine to children under the age of 12 will begin in 2022.

According to a report by Bernama, only the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine will be available for use in children below 12.

Currently, the Ministry is awaiting regulatory approval from the European Union and the United States, it said in a written parliamentary reply to a question raised by Wong Chen (PH-Subang) about the vaccination plans for children aged between five to 12.

"Pfizer is also expected to submit data related to the vaccine registration for use in children below 12 by the end of this year to the NPRA (National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency) for evaluation and approval,” the Ministry said in the reply.

The Ministry added that the government is currently procuring the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine for the children, as the vaccine contains a different formulation compared to those used for the adult population.

Around 5.9 million children are expected to be vaccinated against COVID-19 next year, and the Ministry is expecting to use 11.8 million doses of the vaccine for the exercise.

Let's hope that there's enough doses for all the Malaysian children out there.
