Even after all precautions are taken, being in close contact with thousands of people each day increases the chances of them being infected exponentially.
This is clear from the data shared by Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin recently.
Hundreds tested positive, thousands in quarantine
Free Malaysia Today reported that over 10,000 policemen are currently under quarantine and 200 have been tested positive for COVID-19 so far.
"The spread of COVID-19 virus is becoming more worrying and many frontliners have been exposed to the risk of infection.
“Although they (police) wear face masks, the job requires policemen to communicate with the people at close range. Social distancing cannot be applied in ensuring peace and order,” Hamzah reportedly said.
Affecting the forces's ability to do its duty
Hamzah said that the police were also helping the immigration department to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the country.He added that the high rate of infection among policemen, being frontliners and closest to the public, is hampering the ability and strength of the police in performing their duties.
A high number of them have been working without much of a break, nor have they had the time to spend with their families.
As such, we should appreciate all their hard work, Hamzah said.
