In fact, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bakong used something as basic as mushrooms to lure in extra income for its needs.
How, you ask?
According to a report by The Star Online, the school has been cultivating mushrooms for the past year at an old canteen building which was renovated and turned into a shelter to house the oyster mushrooms spawning bags.
The news portal also reported that the all the nutrients and mushroom spores are pre-packaged.
Wow, speak about being innovative!
The project, implemented by the parents’ toolkit Sarana Ibu Bapa since May last year, has reportedly been roping in an additional income of more than RM15,000 for the school.
SK Bakong Parent Teacher Association (PTA) president Azman Ag Noh told the news portal that the school is also earning an additional net profit of RM1,800 for split gill mushrooms cultivation between April to May this year.
“Currently, we have 10,000 bags of grey oyster mushrooms and 500 bags of split gill mushrooms,” he was quoted as saying, adding that the project was the brainchild of the school’s former headmaster Fadhil Hassan.
Azman said the grey oyster mushrooms are sold for RM10 per kg while the split gill mushrooms are priced at RM40 per kg.
This school deserves an award or two for their entrepreneurship, that's for sure.
