Nearly three years ago, Microsoft made a USD$7.2 billion (RM28.5 billion) acquisition of Nokia, attempting to join the smartphone showdown between Apple and Samsung.
Now, Nokia may see darkness at the end of the tunnel as Microsoft slashes 1,850 jobs. The bulk of the job cuts would be from its Finland-based company. Just last year, they had laid off 7,800 staff.
It doesn't help that only 2.4 million Windows phone devices were sold in the first quarter of 2016, taking up a disappointing 0.7% of the lucrative smartphone market.In an e-mail that was circulated internally from Terry Myerson, Microsoft's head of Windows and devices, it was stated that the company was only 'scaling back, but not out'.
It also added that the company will support its Lumia smartphones and continue develop the Windows 10 platform, but there is no news yet as to whether there will be new Windows phones. There's also the question of whether they will release the Surface Phone any time soon.
