The name change will take effect soon with the blessings from the palace and the late economist and lecturer's next-of-kin.
31 Disember 2020 ~ DYMM Sultan Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj telah memberi perkenan untuk menamakan semula Jalan Universiti di Petaling Jaya, Selangor dengan nama JALAN PROF DIRAJA UNGKU AZIZ.
— Selangor Royal Office (@SelangorRoyal) December 31, 2020
Pertukaran nama jalan ini akan dilaksanakan pada kadar segera. pic.twitter.com/cyaqwTB0FV
Profesor Diraja Ungku Abdul Aziz Ungku Abdul Hamid, who passed away last month at 98, was an icon who've contributed greatly to the country.
What's up with long road names?
While no one can deny the professor's contribution to the country, many netizens are unhappy with the name change. Some were outright against the name change and some suggest a shorter version of it so it's easier to remember.
Keep Jalan Universiti. Find another road to be renamed. Jalan Ungku Aziz or Profesor Ungku Aziz would suffice. No need for a long name, impractical.

Kalau letak nama Jalan Ungku Aziz jer kan ke mcm sedap sikit. Kecuali Sultan² dan Raja², yg lain tu tak letak pangkat pun ok kot... just my opinion.

Jalan ungku aziz dah la.panjang sangat nak sebut

Should change to shorter name, make it convenient to rakyat.

While we appreciate the contribution of people whose names are often used as road names, it does seem inconvenient especially when you're not used to the roads.
How many times have you missed a turn while trying to read a signboard because you've passed it by the time you finish reading it while still keeping an eye on the road?
We're no road safety experts, but as road users, we do find long road names inconvenient and sometimes even dangerous.
Surely there are other ways to honour those who've contributed to the country than renaming roads?
Funny Malaysian roads and places
We're not totally against the idea of changing names of roads and places. Some names are really unfortunate and perhaps deserve a name change more than others. Here are some funny ones that we doubt many would be against changing. Provided they change is not too long or a mouthful!
#1 Desa Temu Jodoh, Johor
We wonder how many people actually go here in the hope of finding their soulmates!
#2 Pulau Kentut Besar and Kecil, Langkawi
Umm... do the islands smell of farts? We're not sure but they sure are beautiful.
#3 Jalan Microwave Station, Sabah
Dkt Sabah. Mmg ada jalan nama Jalan Microwave. pic.twitter.com/0EiDHOgJPA

Is this where Sabahans go to get microwaves?
#4 Jalan Baru Jumpa, Sabah
We're not sure when this road was discovered but perhaps it's time to change it?
