If you’ve been following news related to the Tokyo Olympics, you must have heard of the infamous Japanese mayor, Takashi Kawamura, who bit into a gold medal belonging to homecoming softball Olympian, Miu Goto.

The act didn’t go down well with many people especially in the middle of a pandemic.

The incident, which was broadcast live on television, was condemned by many with over 8,000 complaints being made to Nagoya City Hall, as reported by Mothership, Singapore citing various news reports.

The Nagoya mayor has apologised since and refused to take three months of salary due to his act.
Following the incident, the term ‘germ medal’ was coined and started trending on Japan's social media platforms.

He tested positive for COVID-19 recently

His luck turned worse when Takashi tested positive for Covid-19 on Sept 1, despite being fully vaccinated.

He took the Covid-19 test after his 30-year-old secretary had tested positive for Covid-19 on Aug 29.
He has discharged his duties to other officials while waiting to recover.

Get well soon!
