Johor Is Planning To Build Their Own Version Of Melbourne's Famous Victoria Market

The task of turning a 2.37-hectare land, located in the small town of Tampoi, into a vibrant bazaar called the B5 Johor Street Market falls on the shoulders of the Johor Corporation (JCorp).

Johor's Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin told the news portal that the Street Market will be seperated into a few different sections: a retail bazaar, a box park (we don't know what that is, but we're pretty sure it's not for boxing), a hub for local arts and a section for food trucks.

Not only that, three new shopping malls - Capital 21, Paradigm Mall and Plaza Angsana - are slated to open near the Street Market later this year.

The Street Market is expected to be completed in 2019, and once that happens, Mohamed Khaled said it will become a new tourism attraction in Johor.

The largest open air market in the Southern Hemisphere, Melbourne's Queen Victoria Market is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Australia, if not the world.

The seven-hectare market was established in the late 1860s to serve as a retail and wholesale market, but now, it has become a major tourist attraction in Melbourne, selling a wide variety of food and non-food items such as handmade arts and crafts, jewellery and clothing.

In 2015, a request has been made to place the Market in UNESCO's World Heritage list.
