The Kejara System Is Only Going To Take Effect From 15 April Onwards

The government has just given errant drivers a two-week grace period before they go all out to bust their butts.

The Star Online reports that the Demerit Points System - or better known as Kejara - will only take effect from 15 April onwards.

However, that doesn't mean that you will not be penalised if you break the law as the Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) is already in effect, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai told the news portal.

So basically, if you are caught speeding or running the red light between now and 15 April, you will still receive a summons, but no demerit points will be deducted.

“For now, this is a trial run. Road users who are caught on our automated cameras within this trial period for speeding or beating traffic lights will be sent notifications,” Liow was quoted as saying.

Liow added that the Kejara system will focus on two traffic offences for now, but you can expect more to be added soon.

Oh and also, more AES cameras will be gradually added over time, he told The Star Online.

Awas - an integrated traffic system consisting of the Demerit Points System (Kejara) and Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras - officially came into effect on 1 April.
