Meat lovers, take note!

Malaysia will suspend the import of cattle and buffaloes from Thailand with immediate effect.

According to a report by The Star quoting a statement from the Veterinary Services Department (DVS), this is due to the transmission of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in 41 provinces in the country and to curb the spread here.

“DVS urges all industry players; importers, middlemen and breeders to give their cooperation by cancelling their bookings, if there are any, with the cattle and buffalo suppliers in Thailand.

“The industry players are also advised to immediately report to the state and district veterinary authorities if there are cattle or buffaloes in farms with LSD symptoms for control and prevention action, “said DVS in a statement as reported by The Star.

Monitoring smuggling of cattle and buffalo as well

DVS added that it is also working together with the Malaysian Border Security Agency (Aksem) to monitor the possibility of cattle and buffalo smuggling activities from Thailand.

“The cooperation of Customs and the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) will also step up checks at all the country’s entry points to stop the cattles and buffaloes from entering the country, ” it said.


LSD is an infectious disease in cattle caused by a virus from the Poxciridae family.

Cattle infected with LSD can often be seen with enlarged superficial lymph nodes on th skin which can be permenant.

The disease can also result in reduced milk production, poor growth, infertility and sometimes even death.
