M’sian Teen Bitten by Stray Cat Becomes First Rabies Case in Sarawak This Year
Sarawak has recorded its first human rabies case of the year, involving a 13-year-old boy who was bitten by a stray cat.
The case came to light after the teenager from Kampung Segedup began exhibiting symptoms such as fever, loss of appetite, vomiting, hallucinations, delirium, and hydrophobia on May 21.
Initially, he sought treatment at a private hospital before being referred to Sarawak General Hospital, where clinical tests confirmed he had contracted rabies.

According to The Borneo Post, investigations revealed that the boy had previously been scratched by a stray cat but did not seek medical attention. He was also known to frequently play with and feed stray cats, and had even handled the carcass of a cat that had been struck by a vehicle.
While these actions may be seen as compassionate, the Sarawak State Health Department stated that such behaviors indicate a high level of exposure to rabies infection.

It is understood that the boy is currently receiving treatment at Sarawak General Hospital.
In a separate report, Sarawak Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Stephen Rundi Utom said that authorities have taken preventive measures by capturing stray animals in the area.
The stray cat believed to be involved in this case has been confirmed dead.
The public is urged to remain vigilant about the threat of rabies and to seek immediate medical attention if bitten or scratched by animals, to prevent the virus from affecting the brain and nervous system.

Pet owners are also reminded to take responsibility by ensuring their cats and dogs receive annual anti-rabies vaccinations and are not allowed to roam unsupervised.
