Malaysian Student Wins The Rolls-Royce Electrical Challenge

Malaysia sure has some brainy bunch of students who are making the country proud.

A student from Johor has won the Rolls-Royce Electrical Challenge in the Telegraph STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Awards 2019.

Yew Jun Ying is currently a third year student at the University of Southampton.

He came up with an idea to use the Organic Rankine cycle technology as heat management and recovery solutions, and it won him an internship with Rolls-Royce and mentorship on business and intellectual property from The Telegraph!

Speaking to The Star, the 22-year-old said he wrote an essay to suggest a solution that would accelerate the development of an air-vehicle propulsed by both conventional gas engines and electric motors that is capable of taking off and landing vertically.

He also said that he did an individual project related to recovering waste heat from the internal combustion engines in the university’s energy centre where he discovered heat recovery technologies.

In STEM, the award encourages undergraduates studying in the United Kingdom to present ideas in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to leading companies in the country.
