Did you know that we Malaysians have a lot of unclaimed money that’s been accumulating from decades ago? And the amount will definitely shock you (and your bank account).
According to the government, RM5.779 billion remains unclaimed from 1977 to 30 June 2017. Imagine what we could do with that amount of money!
We're shook. We know, many of you might be thinking what is this “unclaimed money” and where did it come from?
Well the unclaimed money is actually from inactive bank accounts, unclaimed fixed deposits that have surpassed its expiry date, insurance payouts, dividend, and interests.
We’re confident that you’ve probably had a few bank accounts that you’ve left dormant for quite some time which subsequently caused the bank to close it automatically. Who knows, you thought you had only RM10 in that account but it’s actually RM10,000?
The unclaimed money is currently managed by the Registrar of Unclaimed Moneys in the Accountant-General’s Department.
“The total unaudited amount stands at RM8.8 billion. So far, RM1.579 billion has been returned”, Deputy Finance Minister I Datuk Othman Aziz said during a session at the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday.

So, how does one check whether they have any unclaimed money?

The government has set up 25 counters nationwide for you to claim your money. 13 counters are within the Peninsular Malaysia, seven in Sarawak, four in Sabah, and one in Putrajaya.
One of the popular places you can visit to get your unclaimed money is at the 'Pejabat Pendaftar Wang Tidak Dituntut' at the 42nd floor of Menara Maybank in Kuala Lumpur.
Those who wish to file a claim must be present at the counter to fill up some forms and attach the documents required.
Among the documents required are photocopies of your IC (both sides) and your account passbook. Make sure you bring the original documents as well, ah!
If there is no issue with your claim, your money will be credited to you within one month according to this report from the New Straits Times.
Make it rain, Ringgit. Well, what are you waiting for guys? Who knows, you might be secretly rich without the help of some Nigerian prince who sends you shady emails.
