The love a British man had for his beloved car was so great that he refused to part with it when moving back to his homeland from New Zealand.

Instead of leaving his Toyota Land Cruiser behind, Joss Quilty decided to hatch a plan which included shipping the car to Malaysia from New Zealand and then driving the rest of the way to the UK.

He also got his girlfriend, Romy Ramagnoli on board and together, they planned the whole trip.

A journey across 23 countries

The couple traveled through all kinds of terrain.

The 10-month journey began with them travelling from Malaysia to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Iran before reaching Europe.

From there, they continued through Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Italy, Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium and France before finally reaching the UK.

That’s when Quilty added an additional surprise to their adventure by proposing to Ramagnoli.

Our journey ends with the start of another one... 40,000 kms around the world and we’re engaged! #ontheroad#landcruiser#70series#expedition#overlandtravel#overlanding#outdoors#toyota#welivetoexplore#travel#troopy#troopcarrier#troopylife#travel#seetheworld#camping#campinglife#wildcamping#overland#carcamping#womenoverlandingtheworld#wadeit#nztouk#engagement#weregettingmarried

“I had bought this old Toyota and kind of wanted to keep it. It’s a really good car and I’m just amazed that it was possible.”

“Our budget was very tight for the whole trip. We tried to sleep in the vehicle the whole way, with mattresses in the back.”

They spent most nights sleeping at the back of the Toyota

“Romy and I were very much in this together in terms of making decisions - to drive the car back, choosing the route, splitting the money 50/50.”

“There is no way I could have done the trip without her. She’s tough and very keen on a challenge!” he said.

Grateful and ready for new adventures

Planning for new adventures together

The couple, who have been together for five years now, said they couldn’t be more thankful with the support that they’ve gotten.

Quilty and Romagnoli have plans to move to Scotland eventually, and of course, the Toyota is going along too.

What an adventure!
