Boys and girls, it looks like we should really be getting serious about our health.

This is because Deputy Health Minister Dr Lee Boon Chye recently revealed to The Star Online that the number of Malaysians suffering from chronic non-communicable diseases is alarmingly high.

Quoting the Health and Morbidity Survey in 2015, he said that survey found that 47.7 per cent of Malaysians had high cholesterol levels while 17.7 per cent were obese.

"Non-communicable chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia (high cholesterol levels) among Malaysians above 18 is very high.

"Some 17.5 per cent, or 3.6 million Malaysians, suffer from diabetes," he was quoted as saying.

He added that an estimated 17.6 per cent of Malaysians have a BMI of more than 39kg per square metre (which is categorised as obese) and out of that, 11.7 per cent were those between the age of 18 and 19 years old, 12 per cent were those between 20 and 24 years old and 18.3 per cent were those between 25 and 29 years old

Meanwhile, he further revealed that 47.7 per cent Malaysians had high cholesterol, out of which 22 per cent are between 18 and 19 years old, 26.5 per cent of them aged 20 and 24 years old and 33.7 per cent between 25 and 29 years old.

There's no better time to say this: it's high time that we cut down on bubble tea and head to the gym!
