Since we were young, we’ve been told not to share personal items like underwear, toothbrushes, and combs with anyone, not even family members, due to hygiene concerns.

Recently, a Malaysian woman was heavily criticised online after sharing a video of her daughters brushing their hair with new combs on display at a Mydin hypermarket.
In the TikTok video, the woman's husband is seen brushing the hair of one of their daughters, who is seated in a trolley. The video then pans to the side, showing their other daughter brushing her own hair with another comb from the display rack.

The woman jokingly captioned the video, saying her family didn’t go to the hypermarket to buy combs, but rather to brush their hair with the ones sold there.
As if that wasn’t enough, she also replied to a comment on the video, admitting that she didn’t buy the combs they tried out because they weren’t good, and she opted for a different one instead.

Needless to say, the video received a flood of negative comments from social media users, who called the act unhygienic. Some even urged Mydin to take action.
“Why are you teaching your kids to use things that aren't theirs?”

“I showed this video to my 9-year-old and asked if it was okay to use the comb like that. My child said no, we might get lice from other people. Even my child knows better.”
The woman has since uploaded a video defending her actions, but that too backfired.
In a follow-up video, she explained that she did buy the combs. However, eagle-eyed netizens pointed out that the combs she purchased weren’t the same ones her daughters had used in the store.

She also justified trying out the combs by saying the products didn’t come in any packaging.
“It’s not wrong. If you’re unsure, just wash them when you get home,” she said.
Mydin boss responds to the issue
In a short video, Datuk Wira Haji Ameer Ali bin Mydin Mohamed urged customers to always practise proper hygiene etiquette wherever they go.
“I understand that some people love to brush their hair, but please don’t do it at Mydin or any other place. This is about hygiene. It’s not wrong to brush your hair, but buy the comb first."
