Mydin Supermarkets Will No Longer Sell Plastic Straws Starting June 2019
2019 is the year where we’ll see a lot of beneficial changes in our country’s policy in an effort to not only save the environment but to also increase its sustainability.
A lot of eateries across Malaysia have moved forward by discontinuing the use of plastic straws and single-use plastic containers since last year. And this year, Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan have officially banned the use of plastic straws.
It also seems like eateries aren’t the only ones that are going green – supermarkets too.
One small step is one huge leap for the environment. According to Astro Awani, Mydin Mohamed Holdings Berhad (Mydin) has decided to cease the sales of plastic straws effective June 2019 in an effort to support the government’s decision on banning the use of plastic straws in all Federal Territories.
But worry not, before you go into a rage over their decision to stop selling plastic straws, the company has come up with an alternative.
“We will replace plastic straws with environmental-friendly straws instead,” Mydin Managing Director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin told Astro Awani.
Maybe Mydin will start selling trendy metal straws? “There are still customers buying plastic straws regularly and we will try to inform them in stages about our decision. Just like how an anti-smoking campaign works, we will educate the public on how harmful plastic straws can be for the environment and why they should consider using other alternatives,” he added.
Ameer admits that environmental-friendly straws may be slightly costlier than the plastic ones but if it’s for the cause of going green and saving the planet, he fully supports the movement.
Good job, Mydin! Do you think other retailers, wholesalers, and major supermarkets will follow suit?
