A roadside nasi bajet stall in Meru, Ipoh, recently became the target of two men after one of them snatched a cash box and fled on a motorcycle.

The incident, which took place around noon yesterday (21 May), was caught on camera while the seller was doing a TikTok Live session.

In a post on Threads, a woman claiming to be the stall owner’s daughter shared a plea on social media, asking members of the public for help in locating the two suspects.

“Snatch theft incident at my mother’s stall, Nasi Bajet Yanti in Meru, Ipoh. If anyone finds them, please tell me. Those in Ipoh, specifically in Meru, please help me locate these men."

"It’s so easy to steal other people’s hard work. Please help me. It’s not easy for a small business owner to earn a living,” she wrote.

Losses estimated at around RM2,000, including cash and a mobile phone

Based on the video, which has since gone viral, the two men, one wearing a red shirt, acted together, with one posing as a customer while his accomplice waited on a motorcycle. As the woman was packing the rice, the man in the red shirt quickly snatched what is believed to be a cash box containing money and an iPhone 13. He then jumped onto the motorcycle before both fled the scene.

District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Najib Hamdan said the estimated losses amount to around RM2,000, involving cash and a mobile phone.

As of this writing, the two suspects remain at large, but police are actively searching for them.

The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft. If convicted, the offenders may face up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.

Netizens outraged

Unsurprisingly, the incident has sparked outrage on social media. While many expressed sympathy for the seller, others criticised the two men for taking advantage of a small business owner.

“Stupid thieves! There are so many jobs in the world that you can do. Do you think all sellers come from a fortunate background? Please find these thieves!”

That’s so evil. They’re still able-bodied but too lazy to work. I pray that God will replace your losses. May more people stop by your mother’s stall tomorrow to support her business,” said a user.

Another commented, “I really pity the seller. We don’t know how her sales were that day or whether it was enough to cover her expenses. Maybe she thought someone had come to support her business, but instead they came to steal from her.”
