Even as we are grappling with thousands of Covid-19 cases in the country, many working sectors remain open.

In New Zealand, it’s a different story altogether.

The country’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced a nationwide lockdown after discovering a single new case of Covid-19, the first one in the country in the last six months.

Precautionary action

According to a report in BBC, the case, suspected to be a Delta variant, was discovered in the biggest city of Auckland.

The lockdown will last for seven days in Auckland, but three days in other parts of the country.

Coastal town Coromandel, which the infected person had visited will also be under strict lockdown for a week.

"I want to assure New Zealand that we have planned for this eventuality. Going hard and early has worked for us before," Ardern reportedly said.

The country has gone into "Phase 4" lockdown where schools, offices and everything else that are not essential closing down.

While New Zealand has managed to keep COVID-19 away from it's shores for the large part, the vaccination process is slow.

According to reports, only about 20% of its residence are fully vaccinated and 33% have gotten their first doses.

"We have seen what can happen elsewhere if we fail to get on top of it. We only get one chance," Ardern said in a televised address.
