Responsible for more than 100 cases
Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah told Malay Mail that medical researchers have uncovered a mutation of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 in the country.
In fact, this strand of mutation is 'very contagious', he warned.
The Institute for Medical Research (IMR) reportedly discovered the SARS-CoV-2 strand that was responsible for 120 COVID-19 cases here in Malaysia.
“IMR has isolated and cultured the virus. Based on that, we have found out that Case 26 has one mutation.
“The mutation was very contagious and infected 120 individuals,” he was quoted as saying.
Dr Noor Hisham said that medical researchers were made to understand that there are 30 mutations of the virus so far, and Malaysia has identified three strains of SARS-CoV-2 that were detected here.
“Our cases are mostly from strain B which is similar to the type which infected the Chinese in Wuhan if compared with strain A which is from the United States and strain C from Europe," he said.
At the moment, Dr Noor Hisham said that he has urged the IMR to "not only conduct tests but also study the virus by isolating and culture" to see if there's a different strand of the coronavirus present in Malaysia.
