For Monica Green, a mother-of-three living in Rockhamptom, New Zealand, the reality was significantly scarier than the supernatural.
Green came home from a doctor's appointment one day to find the air conditioning turned on, the back door open and a half-cooked meal of chicken nuggets on the stove.
She quickly informed the police who did a check around the house and noticed that the attic door to her ceiling was slightly ajar.
They later discovered evidence that someone had been living above her roof for weeks.
“I felt like it was something out of a horror film.
“I’m meant to be the one that protects them (her children) and I feel like I’ve failed," she said.
Noticing that things were out of place
She has since changed her locks but upon reflection admitted to noticing that certain things have been out of place at her home recently.
Her security camera had also been disabled by the intruder.
"What has this person been doing in my house when I'm not home?" she said according to a report by the New Zealand Herald.
"Were they trying to harm me or my kids? Did they want one of my kids?" she questioned.
The police are still looking for the intruder who has since gone missing.
While we are glad that Green and her children are not harmed, we can't help but wonder if the intruder was inspired by a certain award-winning South Korean black comedy thriller film directed by Bong Joon-ho.
