Flooding is something many families are used to experiencing on a yearly basis in Malaysia.

Some children, especially those living in Pasir Mas and Rantau Panjang, even look forward to playing in floodwaters but this year, the authorities are determined to put a stop to that.



Playing in floodwaters is generally quite dangerous lah.

You don't know what's in the water or under it.

This year, however, the main concern is COVID-19.

No, no to playing in floodwaters

According to a report by New Straits Times, parents or guardians could face compounds if their children were found playing in flood waters.



"It has been a tradition for locals particularly children to play with floodwaters during the rainy season.

"For their safety as well as to break the chain of COVID-19 infection in the state, l have directed my officers to warn the public against playing in floodwaters.

"If they do not want to listen to the warning, we will not hesitate to slap them with a RM1,000 compound for flouting Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP)," warned Pasir Mas district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Roy.

He said that the compounds were not meant to stop the fun but to ensure the safety of the community and in particular, the health of the children.
