If you’re thinking of travelling to Penang this weekend for a nasi kandar eating marathon, think again.

One of the most popular eateries on the island, Nasi Kandar Line Clear, has been instructed to close for two weeks after the state’s Health Department discovered rat droppings and other pests at the shop.

“We found live and dead rats in the premises, along with cockroaches, so they have been ordered to shut down to clean up their premises by the Health Department,” city councillor Ong Ah Teong told Malay Mail Online after performing a thorough inspection on several restaurants in Penang Road today.

After 70 years of business, this was the first time Line Clear received such order from the city council.

Besides Line Clear, Yasmeen restaurant located just next to the popular eatery was also ordered to shut down temporarily due to hygiene issues.

Sup Hameed was another eatery found to be operating in dirty conditions. However, they reportedly only received a RM1,000 compound fine and was not told to close. They were also ordered to do a thorough cleansing of the premises.

Both Line Clear and Yasmeen have reportedly made an appeal to postpone the shutdown slightly so operations will continue until 8pm Monday.

So if you’re in the area and you still have the stomach to down a plate of nasi kandar for some reason even after reading this, you have until 8pm tonight to do so!
