There seem to be way too many scammers just waiting to steal other people's hard-earned money.

It's frustrating but we don't have a choice but to be extra vigilant at all times.

Maybank, via its social media platforms, warned its customers that there is a new fake Maybank2u page and to beware of such duplicate pages.

Fake website that looks exactly like the original

On 13 April, Maybank announced that it had received reports of a new fake Maybank2u website created by fraudsters to steal customers' banking details, including their usernames and passwords.

The bank adviced its customers to only key in the URL Maybank2u.com.my manually.

"Maybank never sends SMS/E-Mail/WhatsApp with links requesting you to log in or update your Maybank2u account," it said.

If you have accidentally become a victim of a scam, contact Maybank at 03-5891-4744 or get more information on the website.

How to detect scams

Scammers are getting smarter and smarter. They keep changing their modus operandi (M.O.) and can seem pretty legit. So here are some ways you can avoid getting scammed.

Never click on links

If you receive messages via SMSes, WhatsApp or other similar messaging services, e-mails etc. claiming to be from a bank, income tax department or other officials which contains links that you could go to, never click on it. Manually insert the official website or e-mail address into your browser instead.

Don't call the number given

Same goes when you are given a phone number to contact through the methods we mentioned above or by someone who calls you claiming to be from your (or any) banks including Bank Negara and other official organisations.

Always find a phone number from the official websites of the bank or organisation the caller claims to be from to verify any information given. Even better, go in person to check out what's what if possible.

Don't believe it if someone calls claiming to be the police

The police is never going to interrogate you over the phone. If someone calls claiming to be from the police and start asking you questions, just hang up.

If you have the time, you can start trolling them too. Just don't bother answering their questions and inform them that you're going to the nearest station to make a report yourself.

Never give out your personal information or banking details

You know those six digit numbers that you get for verification purposes when you conduct a transaction? Never, ever give it out to somebody else.

No banks will ask for such details over the phone, email, or messaging services. Same goes for personal details.

Call your banks and change your passwords immediately

If you get scam calls and the person seem to know a lot of information about you, you might want to change all your passwords immediately and call your bank to make sure no one has managed to take your money.

You can also contact BNMTELELINK at 1300-88-5465 or email [email protected] if the scammers claim to be from Bank Negara.

Bottom line is, always be suspicious. It's always better to appear untrusting than to lose all your money to bad people. Be proactive and check before you release any fund or information to others.
