We’re all a little worried about the novel coronavirus.

Sharing texts and messages to friends and loved ones are quite common, but if you’re not sure if the information is accurate, we suggest that you just keep it to yourself k!

The police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have warned that those caught sharing fake news relating to the virus could be fined up to RM100,000 or jailed for a year.

Four people being questioned for spreading false information

The statement also said that four people were currently being investigated for spreading fake news on the novel coronavirus.

“The police and MCMC will not tolerate any quarters who spread fake news that causes fear, panic or anxiety among members of the public,” the joint statement read.

Spreading false information only creates panic

The police and MCMC also suggested that for the public to refer to the Health Ministry or international health bodies for accurate and authentic information on the coronavirus.

If you’re found guilty of sharing rumours or false information on the virus, you could be prosecuted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Under the act, you can be fined up to RM100,000 or jailed for a year or both!
